QER report provides perspective on the effects of renewable intermittency on the electric power grid, the potential role of energy storage and more

PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA, 6 October 2014 – IEEE, the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced that the IEEE Joint Task Force on Quadrennial Energy Review (QER) submitted its final report to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on a specific set of priority issues related to the following:

  • Renewable intermittency on the electric power grid and the potential role of storage;
  • Utility and energy company business cases related to microgrids and distributed generation (DG), such as rooftop photovoltaics;
  • The technical implications for the grid of electric vehicle (EV) integration;
  • The implications and importance of the aging infrastructure and the overall asset management;
  • Recommendations for metrics for addressing smart grid;
  • Skilled workforce issues; and
  • Condition and performance of the electric grid

The report is in response to an initiative created by President Obama via a Presidential Memorandum he issued in January 2014. The President directed several U.S. Federal agencies to undertake a Quadrennial Energy Review and report their findings in January 2015. Subsequently, the U.S. DOE selected several priority topics and requested that the IEEE provide its insights.

In July, the IEEE Task Force—consisting of IEEE volunteers and co-chaired by Veronika Rabl, chair of the IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee, and Damir Novosel, president-elect of the IEEE Power & Energy Society—delivered a draft report addressing the U.S. DOE’s priority issues, which was open to the public for comment. And as part of the final report, the IEEE Task Force incorporated the comments, provided further detail to the specific priority issues outlined by the U.S. DOE and added an executive summary along with a set of presentation slides.
