Smart Grid Standards
IEEE is uniquely positioned to guide smart grid interoperability standardization, given its significant and relevant breadth of technology expertise and its technical community. With the foundational technical explorations and the already existing standards and standards projects in development from the diverse fields of digital information and controls technology, networking, security, reliability, assessment, interconnection of distributed resources including renewable energy sources to the grid, sensors, electric metering, broadband over power line, and systems engineering—together, this body of knowledge has no match.
IEEE is working closely with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is developing a standards roadmap and conformance testing/certification framework for the smart grid, and is collaborating with other global standards bodies to effectively facilitate standards coordination and to ensure the intensifying smart grid movement’s success.
IEEE has more than 100 standards and standards in development relevant to smart grid, including the over 20 IEEE standards named in the NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 1.0. The NIST report describes a high-level reference model for the Smart Grid, identifies nearly 80 existing standards that can be used now to support Smart Grid development and identifies high priority gaps for which new or revised standards are needed.
