It takes brains to keep the grid running efficiently and reliably. But zombies love brains. So when the undead strike and aim their collective fury at the nation's electric grid, it takes a village to prepare accordingly. This Intelligent Utility article--in celebration of Halloween--takes a tongue-in-cheek look at what would happen during the zombie apocalypse and how we should protect the generation and distribution of electricity at the source: the utility's infrastructure (the most sensitive to zombie attacks).. In this article, Sam Sciacca reflects on the career of a consulting-specifying engineer—from emerging issues to disruptive trends. Sciacca also discusses all the recent technological developments that have been recently made in the energy industry, specifically solar PV and other advancements in renewable energy tech. Based on the 2015 IEEE-IEEMA Intelect Conference and Expo, Sciacca sees the industry trending to H3O (hospitals, hotels and home/offices). Within this category, new emerging innovations come to light: microgrids, load-control technologies and other self-sufficient solutions. Read more

As the vice president of innovation and technology for Enernex, an electric power research and consulting company, in Knoxville, Tenn., I have been asked repeatedly to predict whether there is a danger of blackouts when snowstorms hit various parts of the world in the coming months. Weather services have gone back and forth debating how cold these months will be, especially compared to the dramatic drop in temperature many experienced just last year. Read more

Like any expanding and growing industry, it’s the emerging trends that set a level horizon. The energy industry is no exception. In this article, Sam Sciacca reflects on the interconnections of revised standards and communication networks. With increasing interconnections between consumer facilities and the grid, more policies are generated by utilities, governments and commissions to regulate activity. And with new policies come new standards. Sciacca suggests that consulting-specifying engineers not only need to stay abreast of industry shifts and newly published standards but also the challenges that exist—especially as they apply to responsibilities to clients. The IEEE Power & Energy Society’s President-elect Damir Novosel discusses the IEEE’s efforts to respond to President Obama’s request for a Quadrennial Energy Review (QER). As a result, the U.S. Department of Energy asked IEEE to comment on seven critical areas of interest—from renewable energy to smart grid issues. Novosel provides a brief recap on the IEEE’s findings after the organization conducted an extensive look at all the issues outlined by the President. In the article, published by Intelligent Utility, a link to IEEE's final report is available. Read more

QER report provides perspective on the effects of renewable intermittency on the electric power grid, the potential role of energy storage and more

PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA, 6 October 2014 – IEEE, the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced that the IEEE Joint Task Force on Quadrennial Energy Review (QER) submitted its final report to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on a specific set of priority issues related to the following:

  • Renewable intermittency on the electric power grid and the potential role of storage;
  • Utility and energy company business cases related to microgrids and distributed generation (DG), such as rooftop photovoltaics;
  • The technical implications for the grid of electric vehicle (EV) integration;
  • The implications and importance of the aging infrastructure and the overall asset management;
  • Recommendations for metrics for addressing smart grid;
  • Skilled workforce issues; and
  • Condition and performance of the electric grid

The report is in response to an initiative created by President Obama via a Presidential Memorandum he issued in January 2014. The President directed several U.S. Federal agencies to undertake a Quadrennial Energy Review and report their findings in January 2015. Subsequently, the U.S. DOE selected several priority topics and requested that the IEEE provide its insights.

In July, the IEEE Task Force—consisting of IEEE volunteers and co-chaired by Veronika Rabl, chair of the IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee, and Damir Novosel, president-elect of the IEEE Power & Energy Society—delivered a draft report addressing the U.S. DOE’s priority issues, which was open to the public for comment. And as part of the final report, the IEEE Task Force incorporated the comments, provided further detail to the specific priority issues outlined by the U.S. DOE and added an executive summary along with a set of presentation slides.

Access the full version of the final QER report submitted by the IEEE Joint Task Force and the presentations highlighting the report’s six core topics.
