Artificial Intelligence For Smart Grids

Following the recent publication of Think Smartgrids’ position paper on AI, the speakers will present the key applications of AI for the benefit of power grids and the major challenges associated with their deployment, then discuss the main recommendations of the paper  to overcome certain technical and societal barriers and promote the scaling of AI solutions for networks. The grid operators RTE and Enedis will also give concrete examples of use cases deployed in France.

The discussion will highlight some concrete issues that hinder the industrialization of IA solutions for power grids and will foster an exchange of ideas for concrete solutions, especially regarding:

  • data quality and management
  • the hybridization of techniques and implementation of multidisciplinary strategies
  • Skills and HR issues
  • Standardization
  • ethics, acceptability, inclusion, and the ecological footprint of AI

ABOUT THE MODERATOR AND PANELISTS

judith Guenoun photoJudith Guenoun has a long experience in strategy consulting. Her experience covers strategic marketing and innovation as well as performance, cost optimization and organizational redesign. On a sectoral level, her expertise covers the energy and circular transition, the nuclear industry, renewable energies, green gas, decentralized energy systems, clean mobility, storage as well as other environmental services such as water and waste management, recycling and decarbonization technologies. Prior to joining Quantmetry, Judith was a key member of the the Energy & Utilities practice of CVA (Corporate Value Associates), an internationally recognized strategy consulting firm.

Pierre Mallet photoPierre Mallet is a diplomed engineer from Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris. He worked at the European Commission's DG Energy on the completion of the Internal Energy Market before joining the EDF group. Within the EDF Group, he worked for 11 years at EDF R&D, first on transmission networks, then on the dynamics and control aspects of power systems. He then became regional manager, in charge of power and gas distribution and meters management. Pierre Mallet is now R&D Director at Enedis, chairman of the Board of Directors of CIRED, Member of the Technology Committee of EDSO, and French alternate member of the International Energy Agency WG on Smart Grids (ISGAN).

JP Poirrier photoJean-Philippe Poirrier has extensive experience in Electric Utilities and High Tech Manufacturing businesses. His experience includes HR and field operations management, marketing of high-tech solutions, strategic business relationships, as well as program management and applied research. He is currently in charge of the smart metering division of Enedis, France's main DSO. Having joined Enedis 14 years ago, he was previously in charge of smart grid industrialization, after being regional HR Director and Electrical Operations manager. Prior to joining Enedis, Jean Philippe was Vice-President of EasEnergy (an EDF affiliate), Director of Marketing at Pentadyne, an energy storage systems manufacturer, Program Manager at RTE, the French National Transmission Grid Operator, where he was in charge of control systems deployment, and projects engineer at SNCF – the French national railways company.

Vincent Lefieux RTEVincent Lefieux is a graduate of ENSAI (Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Analyse de l'Information) and holds a PhD in Statistics (Rennes 2 University). After having held positions as a research engineer at EDF R&D and then RTE R&D, he created and managed a team of data scientists at RTE. he created and managed a team of data scientists at RTE. His research topics included statistical learning applied to time series forecasting, including electricity consumption and renewable energy generation. He is currently Deputy Director of Statistics and Data Valuation. In parallel, he has given numerous courses (time series, machine learning, deep learning) in engineering schools and was an associate lecturer (PAST) at Sorbonne Université from 2010 to 2015.

Vincent Debusschere UGAVincent Debusschere joined the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan, in 2001, for studies in the field of applied physics, where he received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (on eco-design of electrical machines) in 2009. He joined then the Grenoble Electrical Engineering Laboratory (Univ. Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble INP) in 2010, as an Associated Professor. His research interests include flexibility levers to integrate renewable energy in smart grids, economic and environmental criteria for optimization and design of energy systems and artificial intelligence. He was convenor of a CIRED WG on technical criteria for microgrids to operate in both interconnected and islanded modes and is now convenor of a new CIRED WG on AI for smart ADMS.
