2020 has been a very difficult year globally and for everyone, and IEEE Smart Grid (SG) is no exception. I am happy to report that the Smart Grid volunteers have risen to the challenges the year has presented.

IEEE Smart Grid, a fully functioning program of IEEE under the administration of IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) has developed as a professional community and providing globally recognized Smart Grid information, expertise, and guidance for individuals and organizations involved in the modernization and optimization of the power system generation, transmission and distribution grid including the integration of renewable energy sources. It provides a platform under the leadership of Peter Wung as the Chair of the IEEE Smart Grid program and Phyllis Caputo as IEEE staff Project Manager through its Steering Committee, Operations Committee, and 6 committees managing portfolios like R&D, Education, Publications, Meetings & Conferences, Marketing and Technical Activities.

In 2020 we experienced an unprecedented thread of events stemming from the wide and untethered spread of a virus with a considerable mortality rate. Although the focus of the world was on the efforts of the medical and pharmaceutical communities, the rest of human activity was not left unaffected. Electrical power systems were faced with a complete shift in a load of customers’ behaviors. IT infrastructure and services experienced similar phenomena. Everything that usually goes unnoticed in our every day, we discovered that it defines it in a unique way, and we reassessed its value.
