DER and Grid Management – Putting DERMS on the Desk

Presenters: Jesse Gantz & Ethan Boardman from GE Grid Solutions and Alex Portilla from Pacific Gas & Electric

Thursday, March 9, 2017 | 1:00 – 2:00pm ET

Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERM) solutions lie at the intersection of operations and economics. Properly orchestrated, the inherent operational flexibility of DER can be leveraged by utilities to mitigate or prevent operational challenges, increase hosting capacity, defer network related capital upgrades and establish new revenue streams. But what does it mean to “put DERM on the desk”? Why and how should utilities incorporate DER management in day-to-day Grid Operations?

This webinar will address these questions as well as introduce the integrated DERM solution that is currently being deployed at Pacific Gas & Electric for a DERM pilot project. Topics will include project motivations and use cases, application of standards, solution architecture and sub-systems, DER control functions enabled by advanced inverters, as well as the DERMS user interface and a product demonstration.

About the Speakers:

Jesse Gantz is a Solution Design Engineer at GE Grid Solutions in Redmond, WA. Jesse’s responsibilities include the design and implementation of Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) and Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERM) solutions. He is a technical lead for the PG&E DERMS pilot project and has previously led the testing and commissioning of ADMS network analysis and optimization functions at a number of distribution control centers. Mr. Gantz received the Bachelor’s degree in Physics from McGill University and the Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He is a member of IEEE Power and Energy Society.

Ethan Boardman is Technical Director for Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) with GE Grid Software Solutions. Since 1997 he has worked on the development of the ADMS product line for support of Distribution Operations with an emphasis on a single modular system providing SCADA, DMS, and OMS functionality. Ethan served for 10 years as ADMS Marketing Product Manager and Business Development Director. His focus is now on technical business development and consulting around ADMS encompassing distributed energy resources (DER). Ethan joined GE, then ESCA Corporation, in 1982 as a network analysis applications engineer and developer. He has worked in the areas of both EMS and DMS product development and project implementation. Ethan Boardman earned his BSEE and MSEE from the University of Washington.

Alex Portilla is currently running PG&E's Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) Demonstration Project. Alex joined PG&E's Emerging Grid Technologies group in 2013 where he is focused on evaluating emerging smart grid technologies with potential to deliver utility operational and customer benefits. Prior to the DERMS project, Alex was working across several large scale smart grid demonstration projects including Volt/VAR Optimization, Line Sensors and Fault Detection and Location. Before PG&E, Alex was strategy and business development consultant with the Innovation Center Denmark (ICDK) advising Danish cleantech companies in the US.
