IEEE DEIS presents Online Partial Discharge (PD) Monitoring and Diagnosis of High Voltage (HV) Apparatus

Partial discharge (PD) is a localized breakdown in the insulation system of high voltage (HV) apparatus. PD measurement has been adopted for online condition monitoring and diagnosis of HV apparatus. However, PD is a complicated phenomenon and stochastic in nature. It is still a challenging task to de-noise the measured PD signals, extract representative features from measurement data, and identify PD sources (i.e. insulation defects) that cause discharge inside HV apparatus.

In this webinar we present a general framework of applying signal processing and pattern recognition techniques to PD signal analysis. Within this framework, we discuss a number of representative algorithms for PD signal de-noising, dimensionality reduction and feature extraction, multiple PD source separation, and PD source classification in the context of online PD measurement. Case studies using datasets collected from PD measurements in laboratory and at field are presented to demonstrate the applicability of various signal processing techniques in PD signal analysis.

About the Speakers:

 

Dr. Hui Ma (M’ 95, SM’16)received his B.Eng and M.Eng degrees from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China in 1991 and 1994, M.Eng (by research) degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1998, and PhD degree from the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia in 2008. Currently Dr. Ma is a research fellow in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, the University of Queensland, Australia. From 1997 to 1999, he worked as a firmware development engineer in CET Technologies Pte. Ltd., Singapore. He was with Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology as a research engineer from 1999 to 2003. His research interests include industrial informatics, condition monitoring and diagnosis, power systems, wireless sensor networks, and sensor signal processing.

  

Professor Tapan Saha (M’93, SM’97) received his B.Sc Engineering (electrical and electronic) in 1982 from the Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh, M. Tech (electrical engineering) in1985 from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India and PhD in 1994 from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Tapan is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, University of Queensland, Australia. Previously he has had visiting appointments for a semester at both the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden and at the University of Newcastle (Australia). He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. His research interests include condition monitoring of electrical plants, power systems and power quality.
