Mike Bourton

About the Speakers:

Mike Bourton co-founded Kitu Systems originally as Grid2Home Inc. leveraging more than 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry.

Mike has extensive experience working with early stage and established telecom companies, developing their strategic plans, business models, product and marketing plans and guiding them through their life cycle. His functional involvements have spanned general management, design and development, marketing, corporate and strategic marketing and planning, market development and product line management, corporate alliance and business development.

Prior to co-founding Kitu Systems, Mike was Director of New Business Development for Texas Instruments in the Home Networking. He also served as vice president and general manager for Agilent Technologies where he was responsible for the design and manufacture of telecommunication testing and service assurance equipment and was vice president and general manager for Acterna Corporation, the largest provider of communications test solutions for telecommunications and cable network operators. While at Acterna, Mike was responsible for the design and marketing of test equipment for the field access network, from voice, DSL to high speed optical. He began his management career in the UK at Telspec and then IPM, providers of communications systems. At IPM he was general manager of Europe and Asia responsible for the development of payphone equipment and marketing in Asia.

Mike received his bachelor's degree in Communication Engineering from Plymouth University, UK. He is US citizen.

Steve Kang

Steve Kang directs the development of all QualityLogic test products including those for Smart Grid, Imaging and Fax/Telecom industries. Steve has a long history in directing and managing engineering organizations. Prior to joining QualityLogic, he was a consultant at AHT, Inc., where he managed and developed on-going consulting projects with client companies. Before that, he was a manager at both Sun Microsystems and Xerox Corporation. In both cases, he developed technical strategy, and managed engineering groups and the development of sophisticated software applications. Earlier in his career, Steve was also VP of Engineering at both Colorbus and AHT, Inc. Steve holds an MS in Computer Science from USC and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School.

James Mater

James Mater is one of the leading experts on smart grid standards interoperability and the maturity of products based on standards. He leads his company's smart grid business and has given dozens of talks and papers on interoperability in the smart grid, including a DistribuTech UU course on Interoperability. He was an original member of the SGIP Test and Certification Committee (TCC); is a member of the GridWise Architecture; contributes to the development and operation of numerous industry Interoperability Test and Certification Authorities (ITCA); and is Past Chair of Smart Grid Northwest. He does training and lectures on OpenADR and IEEE 2030.5 and organized 2 Symposiums on IEEE 2030.5 and a workshop on DER Communications Standards co-sponsored by EPRI and OpenADR. James holds a bachelor's degree in physics from Reed College, Portland, OR and an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Robby Simpson

Robby Simpson, PhD, is a System Architect for GE Grid Solutions, where he guides the architectures for GE smart grid systems. Accordingly, Robby divides his time between designing and evaluating GE Grid Solutions' architectures with particular attention to scalability, security, and interoperability and standards bodies' activities.

Robby has been engaged in the smart grid industry for a number of years, particularly in the areas of AMI, metering, demand response, and home area networking, and has been heavily involved in accelerating standards for smart grid interoperability. Robby is active in IEEE (he is Vice Chair of the IEEE-SA CAG and Vice Chair of IEEE 2030.5), ANSI, IEC, IETF, SGIP (he is a member of the Board of Directors and Vice Chair of OpenFMB), and the ZigBee Alliance. Through these efforts, he not only helps to accelerate standards development, but also ensures the adoption of those standards within GE and the market as a whole.

Robby received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Clemson University and his M.S.E.C.E. and Ph.D. (Electrical and Computer Engineering) degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), where he focused on Internet measurements, large-scale simulation, network protocols, and information security. Prior to focusing on smart grid, Robby worked on satellite communications at MIT's Lincoln Labs.

Robby has published several refereed conference and journal papers on topics ranging from network measurements, network security, and network simulation to superconductor behavior. Robby has also received numerous awards for his academic and industry efforts and is an Eagle Scout (and still believes it to be worth mentioning all these years later).
In his spare time, Robby enjoys horseback riding, playing table tennis, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Rudi Schubert

Rudi Schubert is the Director, New Initiatives for the IEEE Standards Association, focusing on incubation of emerging technology standards and the productive implementation of IEEE standards to accelerate technology adoption. He leads the IEEE Industry Connections program, operating consensus building interest groups across a portfolio of topics including augmented reality, ethics for autonomous systems, internet of things, big data, 3D body processing, artificial intelligence, digital identity, smart cities, next generation vehicle technologies and many others. Before joining the IEEE, Rudi was a principal engineer for EnerNex, providing technical expertise on technology standards and testing programs to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for their Smart Grid initiatives. He also spent nearly 20 years in progressively expanding leadership roles with Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) establishing technical criteria and implementation methodologies that become a mandated compliance and certification standard used by US telecom carriers for technology deployment.

Rudi has a 25+ year record of leading, developing and implementing industry standards and testing programs, assuring expectations for functional performance, compatibility, product robustness and safety are achieved. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey.
