IEEE Standards for Emerging Customer Energy Systems

Presented by: Shawn Chandler and Robby Simpson

Monday, January 29, 2018 | 1:00 – 2:00pm ET

This session will review active standards related to implementing smart grid functionality in the electric power system, specifically with regard to distributed energy resources and economic controls for customer systems, an important consideration for future management of DER and smart cities. We will review the portfolio of several smart grid standards, a brief history of developing smart energy networks, discuss the revision of IEEE P2030.5 – Smart Grid Home Area Network (HAN), and relationships with smart buildings and smart cities development covered under IEEE P825 – Transactive Energy.

About the Speakers:

Shawn Chandler is a Director within Navigant’s global Energy. His focus is on systems development, systems integration, and utility analytics. Mr. Chandler chairs the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Smart Buildings, Loads and Customer Systems Technical Committee, leading the development of distributed energy resource standards for energy related systems behind the meter. He also chairs the IEEE Internet of Things -Smart Cities Working Group, leading global activities, collaboration and standards development coordination for customer-based IoT systems and devices.

Chris Searles

Robby Simpson, PhD, is a System Architect for GE Grid Solutions, where he guides the architectures for GE smart grid systems. Accordingly, Robby divides his time between designing and evaluating GE Grid Solutions' architectures with particular attention to scalability, security, and interoperability and standards bodies' activities.

Robby has been engaged in the smart grid industry for a number of years, particularly in the areas of AMI, metering, demand response, and home area networking, and has been heavily involved in accelerating standards for smart grid interoperability. Robby is active in IEEE (he is a member of the IEEE-SA BOG, Chair of the IEEE-SA CAG, and Vice Chair of IEEE 2030.5), ANSI, IEC, IETF, SEPA (he is Vice Chair of OpenFMB), and the ZigBee Alliance.
