Got Gas? It is Cyber Security Failure if You Don’t!

The failure at Colonial Pipeline can happen to anyone who runs a control system and uses modern technology for the user interface, regardless of the underlying control system. Electric utilities are just as vulnerable as Colonial. Understanding Ransomware, how it gets into a system, what it does when it engages, and what you lose if you don’t pay. Ransomware is insidious and hard to stop, a simple firewall is not enough to stop it, nor is a spam filter enough. Ransomware can take many paths into an organization, even a smart phone. Phishing is one of the most common paths into an enterprise. Not all ransomware is restricted to Microsoft platforms, and some can even attack control system platforms. Here are some tips on actively avoiding ransomware, keeping it out of control systems, and finding it before it is too late.

Doug Houseman has extensive experience in the energy and utility industry and has been involved in projects in more than 70 countries. Doug is a leader in grid modernization thinking, he was asked to author significant portions of the IEEE’s GridVision 2050, DOE’s QER and to revise CEATI’s Distribution Utility Technology Roadmap. Doug is a NIST fellow and member of the GridWise Architecture Council (GWAC) where he had a hand in both the Smart Grid Interoperability Maturity Model and Transactive Energy. He has led the IEEE Power and Energy Society’s Intelligent Grid Coordinating Committee and Emerging Technology Committee for the last five years. He has presented more than 20 tutorials and webinars for grid modernization for IEEE. 
Carmen Garibi is a director for 1898 & Co., part of Burns & McDonnell, where she leads opportunity development efforts for the Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity, Risk and Compliance team.
