Blockchain is an emerging technology that has gained considerable attention in the past years and is becoming an important component of grid modernization. Blockchain is a distributed database that uses data cryptography and consensus algorithms to validate, authenticate and create a trusted distributed database environment, adding immutability, traceability and transparency to energy and utility data records. Blockchain will be an important technology to enable new energy market design, create new peer-to-peer energy transaction models, improve grid efficiency and many other applications that will be introduced in the next years. This panel will explore these topics with the industry leaders in this segment.

Chair: Mr. David Bowker, BSc MComm GAICD
David is convenor of the CIGRE C5.30 working group which is assessing the application of blockchain technology to electricity market systems. He has previously been convenor of a CIGRE working group studying the mitigation of systemic market risks in electricity markets. He has an Engineering degree from the UK and a Master of Commerce degree from Cape Town University. David has worked for Caltex and de Beers in several countries prior to joining Hydro Tasmania in 1991. During his time at Hydro Tasmania David was the inaugural winner of the Sir Allan Knight Scholarship which allowed him to study energy markets in the UK. David has had roles within Hydro Tasmania in information technology, corporate strategy and energy policy areas. David was the deputy chairman of the board of the Australian National Generators Forum for 6 years, an industry association of electricity generators across Australia. His particular interests lie in strategy and governance and he chairs the governance committees for Cancer Council Tasmania and Cancer Council Australia.

Fazel Mohammadi received the Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Windsor, ON, Canada. Dr. Mohammadi is the founder of the Power and Energy Systems Research Laboratory. He is a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and an active member of International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), European Power Electronics and Drives (EPE) Association, American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Dr. Mohammadi is Canada representative in CIGRE C5.30 working group, which is assessing the role of Blockchain technologies in power markets.
His current research interests include Power and Energy Systems Control, Operation, Planning, and Reliability, High Voltage Engineering, Power Electronics, and Smart Grid.
Hannes Agabus, PhD, Energy Economics Expert in Tallinn University of Technology
Hannes is a member of the CIGRE C5.30 working group which is assessing the application of blockchain technology to electricity market systems.
He has a Ph.D. in power engineering and has published several scientific papers mainly on energy economy and energy policy, renewable energy systems and energy production, energy markets and energy trading, technology development planning and management.
Hannes has been closely involved with different considerable developments in the Estonian energy sector, helping to blueprint Estonian energy sector development plans and draw up different acts, grid codes and standards. He has been involved with number of research and development projects in the field of energy and cleantech.
During his professional career, he has worked for Estonian TSO and for the major renewable energy developer and producer in Baltics. Also managed private cleantech equity fund and founded technology company.
Dr. Umit Cali, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Dr. Umit Cali is a seasoned technology researcher conducting academic-based research activities in energy analytics, blockchain and economics, including 20 years of international experience in the fields of energy systems, data science, blockchain technologies, ICT, energy markets and economics. He has worked for IBM International (Istanbul/Turkey) as a network engineer and project manager, a senior researcher in energy informatics and economics (Fraunhofer Institute – Germany), an Energy Consultant (Lahmeyer International- Germany), a Manager in wind energy project development and energy markets/energy economics (EnBW –Utility in Germany), Chief Technology Officer for an international service provider in energy efficiency (KREEN Renewables GmbH- Germany/Switzerland) and assistant professor in three universities (Gediz University- Turkey, the University of Wisconsin at Platteville and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte).
Dr. Cali is also co-founder of US (NSF SBIR funded) and Europe based technology startup companies which are active in advanced energy informatics and blockchain. He is working as associate professor of Energy Informatics in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and currently serves as Vice Chair of IEEE Blockchain in Energy Standards WG (P2418.5).
Hannah Davis, EPRI
Hannah Davis is the project lead for the Utility Blockchain Interest Group (UBIG) at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). UBIG is a utility focused interest group that uses a collaborative approach to accelerate industry learning and applications by sharing use cases and lessons learned and developing best practices.
EPRI is an independent, non-profit organization that conducts research, development, and demonstration projects for the benefit of the public in the United States and internationally. EPRI focuses across the energy industry, with research in generation, transmission, and distribution to support safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electric power.
Hannah holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Georgetown University and bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Franklin and Marshall College. Hannah is a member of the CIGRE C5.30 working group focused on evaluating the role of blockchain technology in electricity markets.
Claudio Lima, Blockchain Engineering Council (BEC)
Dr. Claudio Lima is a thought leader in advanced energy (utilities, oil and gas) and telecom/IT, working with emerging technologies and digital transformation. He has a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering (UKC England, 1995), M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He served as Vice Chair of the IEEE 2030 Smart Grid Standards. He led smart grid and advanced telecom/IT R&D and global initiatives and worked at Sprint Advanced Technology Labs (Sprint ATL), in Silicon Valley-CA. He also served as co-chair of the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC)/Energy, Utility and Oil & Gas and as a global standards director of EEA Ethereum Enterprise Alliance. Currently, Dr. Lima is co-founder of the Blockchain Engineering Council (BEC), chair of IEEE Blockchain in Energy Standards WG - P2418.5, vice-chair of IEEE Blockchain IoT Standards WG- P2418.1, chair of the IEEE Blockchain Transactive Energy Initiative, Member of the Blockchain/DLT Cybersecurity Industry Advisory Board (IAB) of PNNL/DOE, Member of ISO Blockchain/DLT for Power WG standard.
