Energy Storage as an Emerging Smart Grid Asset

Energy Storage (ES) has been present on the grid for decades, for example the 20,000MW of pumped storage operating in the U.S. However, technology advances in both batteries and inverters have expanded functionality and lowered costs to the point that battery-based ES systems are now being actively deployed for a much wider range of applications, including renewables integration and microgrid implementation. This webinar will outline how ES reached this point of growing adoption, and highlight topics critical for continued ES adoption and effective integration, including, technical standards, safety codes, and useful collaboration across industry segments.

Charlie Vartanian

About the Speakers:

Charlie Vartanian is an Energy Storage Business Development Manager at Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc (MEPPI). MEPPI is a U.S. based provider of power equipment and turnkey power projects in North America. His current focus is on advanced grid products including energy storage and HVDC systems.

Charlie has over 25 years of power industry experience with advanced grid technologies, performing electric system studies, and contributing to technical standards development. He previously worked for DNV KEMA, Enron Energy Services, the California Energy Commission, and Southern California Edison. During his 15 years at Southern California Edison, Charlie’s activities spanned traditional T&D planning through R&D. He is a Senior IEEE member and currently Secretary of the IEEE 1547 Revision Working Group, and Co-Chair of the IEEE Energy Storage Task Force. Charlie received his BSEE from Cal Poly Pomona, and his MSEE from USC.

 


Chris Searles

Chris Searles has worked in the DC Power Systems and stationary battery industry for over 35 years. He currently chairs the IEEE Energy Storage and Stationary Battery Committee, having been a member of this committee for over 10 years, serving in several leadership roles. Chris is also a member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society Technical Council, is co-chair of the SCC 21/IEEE PES/ESSB Energy Storage Task Force in addition to his duties as National Director of Business Development.

He has held product management, business development and marketing management positions for Northern Telecom, ITT Power Systems, Alpha Technologies, and EnerSys before joining BAE Batteries USA. He is an accomplished speaker and teacher, giving papers and presentations at many conferences and seminars throughout North America, including BATTCON, Infobatt Canada, IEEE, to name a few.

Chris currently lives in the metropolitan Dallas TX area with his wife Carol, has a son in the battery business, as well as a daughter and several grandchildren.
